Comment sections that appear in online publications have become an interesting front in the ongoing battle either for or against our present day “green energy” options. There is passion on both sides as each side puts forth their arguments. It’s almost as if these publications delight in the lobbing out of a story , only to watch the fun begin as the comment section begins to swell. I wouldn’t be surprised if said publications use this as a means to garner advertising revenue. Low on cash? let’s throw out a story on wind turbines and let the “hit” count begin.
The real purpose of those commenting is to reach the hearts and minds of those with a passing interest. Get them to see your side and they’ll become part of your army that will add to the diverse list of commenters that can add to the next story. This will further gain credibility to your position. Of course there are those like myself that feel it necessary to get to as many of these stories/ comment sections as possible. If I’m late to the game, I’ll have a look , see how others are faring and if help is needed, I’ll jump in. Even if the odds are overwhelming, I won’t hesitate and I’ll never back down. There are some of us like that out there and they should all be commended.
There are times when it’s useful to go behind enemy lines to these pro- green energy promulgators and see how they operate. It’s not easy to do. I find I need a good hot shower afterwards. They often resort to following a sort of playbook they stick to over and over again as evidenced when the same cut/paste comments appear in differing comment sections from all over the map. They try to provide evidence to all their claims with links to personal websites that show reports that are outdated at best, misleading and incomplete. They also think that in presenting it this way, those on the fence will fall their way. They don’t stick around to defend their position on these comment sections, because in most cases they can’t. They just post , and run away.
If you try to post a comment on their personal or organizational sites, that opposes their narrative, it will not survive their view of moderation. They can’t handle or be willing to debate dissenting views and will only allow comments favourable to their own view. Also, they will post “hit” pieces towards those they’re really afraid of, and not allow any response. I know, I’ve had it happen to me many times. I view it as a compliment getting them to unspool. They also think that in presenting their point of view this way, those on the fence will fall to them.
Every once in awhile when desperation sets in, those that benefit from this the most will cite hastily compiled reports that try to enhance their cause. It’s only a matter of time when those who are much smarter than me shine a significant amount of wattage towards them to show how sloppy the reports are, how the scientific method is totally lacking and how biased they are to their side. It’s like these studies beg to be hitched up to the back of a chariot, dragged through the streets of Scruitny and arrive at the Coliseum , a bloody corpse to be mocked and totally discredited by all. It’s a wonder they keep insisting on doing this.
So in the end , when most ordinary folks peruse these comment sections, learn to recognize the playbook, and understand that’s all they have left. If you wish to jump in, have some creative and probing questions for them. We have time and truth on our side. Humour is a wonderful tool as these people have none. Let them become more shrill and outrageous as they will have no creative answers which show they are only capable of following said playbook.
By being persistent, you can entice them to scrap the playbook, and they won’t be able to help themselves. From us being continually called nimbys, to showing commercials blowing up children who don’t follow the edicts, to youtube videos showing polar bears falling out of the sky because of air travel , there’s no limit to the extremes they’ll go. Most reasonable people looking through these comment sections will then make their choice to the side espousing competency and solid up-to-date references opposing these recent versions of green energy. Our ranks are increasing with each story.
